I chuckle when I see these young kids train. They look so good in their karate uniforms, they are so proud, yet I wonder how many of them can be crazy enough to really learn the real martial art, and actually get some real karate power.

Look, if you want to saw a piece of wood, you don’t take a half a dozen cuts and then stop, you watch the cut, make sure it is happening right, and you continue, no matter how sore you get, until the wood separates.
Now, if you want to break a brick, a simple trick, you simply set it up and start hitting it. And you hit it and hit it, and you focus on it until you don’t even see the rest of the world, and the brick eventually separates.
Now, there is more to it, you want to be able to break that brick with one chop, but the message here is that you have to give yourself over to a fanatical mindset.
You have to dedicate yourself, and do it and do it and do it, and have the firm knowledge that you will not quit, that you will squash any ideas of quit, that you will get where you are going.
It’s funny, I see some martial artists from other countries, and they are actually a little more rabid than USers. Well, there mommie didn’t let them stay home from school if it was raining. She didn’t bring them milk and cookies and console them if the homework was tough…she told them to dry up and get the durned job done.
That’s how it used to be in America, and thats why we achieved greatness.
We can have greatness again, even if you were coddled as a school child.
Simply dedicate yourself, be a fanatic. Tell yourself you are going to do that form a hundred times a day every day for one year,a nd then do it. Belive me, you will understand that Kata, and you will have abilities that you never even dreamed of when you were a lazy school kid. It’s up to you, but you have to give yourself over to fanaticism, and that is the secret of real karate power. To practice this you should loop it and do it in sequence maybe ten times. Don’t do it just once, keep doing it.
Concentrate on the moment of focusing energy down, and letting yourself float sideways to the next position. Have the differences between these two things firmly in your mind.
Have a partner and mirror each other. Critique each other, and get lower and longer and more explosive. Be twins in motion and structure.
Practice just standing in the horse stance (called Kiba Dachi in Japanese). This is called Horse Meditation, and if you can hold the pose for just five minutes, you will have an immensely strong stance, and you will be generating tons of pure, raw power.
Above all, do it every day.
And, most important, look for applications,a nd practice those applications until you can make them work against anybody, and in situation or environment.
Remember, when you do the horse stance you are gripping the ground, enabling yourself to move over slick surfaces, and this could mean on wet grass, oily cement, or even through puddles of blood, and yet still hold your balance and footwork.

Karate is one of the best places to start energy manifestation (chi power and all that), because it starts with a simple explosion. Once you can explode, however, you need to figure out what to do with the energy that you have exploded.
Shaolin might turn and roll it, Pa Kua might spiral it, Tai Chi will suspend it, and so on. Every system has specific things they do with energy. Even the same systems will emphasize different progressions of this thing called Chi power.
That said, it can take too long to develop chi without Karate. And it can take too long to develop chi power even in Karate unless you have proper matrixing. Matrixing is logical and will enhance all progress and speed of progress.
The most important thing,however, is to change courses when you learn how to explode. You must ‘go backwards,’ learn how to empty yourself, and try different manipulations of the body if you want to find different manifestations of energy.
A Karate student who just keeps doing the same old same old will tend to stagnate. You know a lot of people drop out of Karate after getting their black belt in that hard art? They know, intuitively, that karate, once so wild and wooley and invigorating, has become a stop point. They know that they must seek elsewhere to continue their upward progress.

not all systems explode
Karate makes power. Karate is power.
You do those forms and you feel the power start to take hold, you feel your body energize and get stronger and stronger. Finally, you have the power! You can explode with instant energy that is unstoppable. What now?
Well, what now is that you need to take a second step. The second step is not more power.
What? You don’t like that answer? But you’ve already got enough power…what do you need more for?
Let me ask you a question, if you had to fight ten guys, would you fight ten times as hard?
You’d fight one tenth as hard for each guy.
So you don’t get more energy and violence and move faster and faster…that just wastes you. What you do do is learn to be efficient, to create the effct of more energy with less effort and less motion.
So when you get your black belt, start to look around. See if other arts will compliment this concept. Look at yourself, see if you can hit softer…and yet create greater effect. There are methods, you know. It is possible…you just have to break out of the method you’ve been trained in and…reverse your path.
you read that right.
Once you hit black belt…you have to train in the opposite direction, get softer and softer, until people can hardly even see you.
I used to train with some of the toughest guys in the world, outlaw bikers. But they all bowed quickly and stood silent in the presence of the most polite man in the world. What he knew in gentleness was far greater than all their massive muscle.

It’s easy to grow Internal Power, no matter what style of Karate you do. The problem is that there are so few accurate descriptions–we are lacking directions, you see–that very few people ever make the simple connections.
Now, I read the existing descriptions, mostly Chinese, a few Japanese, and I couldn’t get it. But I kept coming across this thing called ‘Moving the body as one unit,’ and I tried to put it to work.
Unfortunately, it being alien, I screwed up a few times, but I finally formalized the procedure.
1) Start moving all body parts at the same time.
2) Stop moving all body parts at the same time.
3) Synchronize motion of the body parts, taking into account the length of the limb, the amount of weight, the musculature involved, and so on.
Now, there’s more, but it all started with getting these three things down. Once they were down, I was growing internal energy. The problem…I didn’t know it.
Internal energy, when you don’t know what you are doing, grows slowly. Fortunately, once you know what you are doing, it can grow speedily.
So, after a couple of years of following and refining the three steps listed above, a guy showed me a spinning kick out of Tae Kwon Do. I liked it, but it was not combat useful, so I changed it. I stood in a horse stance, swapped feet, and kicked with the back foot in a ‘spinning’ horse stance.
Actually, it was more of a ‘pop hop’ kick, but you don’t see the hiop part because you move fast and keep the head in the same place in space.
Zingo Bingo, internal energy exploded from the tan tien, and brother…I FELT IT!
Of course I had a couple of years of internal energy stored up from doing the forms, that helped–grin–but the explosion was just as the old CHinese and Japanese texts had described…with one difference.
The Internal energy descritions came from Tai Chi, or Aikido, or Wudan based arts, and the descriptions described a slower pace, a slower emitting of energy. So, while the descriptions were accurate, they confused.
1) Do your Forms
2) Use your body as one unit (I call this concept CBM–Coordinated Body Motion)
3) Have patience.
Just remember, it’s like cooking, sometimes you have to sit watch the pot simmer. But, following the directions above, you shouldn’t have to wait as long.
